CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: YULETIDE HAUNTINGS 2026

We’re currently accepting proposals for non-fiction pieces for our next issue of Yuletide Hauntings, a special edition of HELLEBORE inspired by the old tradition of telling ghost stories for Christmas.

We’re looking for well-researched pieces (approx. 2000 words) that discuss the supernatural in folklore, history, literature, art, religion, philosophy, science and popular culture in Britain and Ireland. Ghosts and apparitions are only one of these manifestations—we encourage different approaches.

Pieces should be directed at a popular audience but have an academic flair. They must also preserve the mystery and enchantment of the themes we’re dealing with. If you’re unsure about the tone, please refer to our previous issues.

We’re NOT looking for:

-Your personal experiences of ghosts, magic, folklore, or the occult.

-Reviews of any kind.

-Pieces that discuss why a film, book, or cultural product is or isn't folk horror.

-Poetry or fiction.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Send us a brief proposal (c. 200 words), followed by your references and sources, a short bio, and links to your published work, to helleborezine(at)gmail(dot)com, with YH26 WRITING as the subject, before Friday the 29th of May

We only have one editor, so please understand that we can’t provide individual feedback. If we’re interested in publishing your piece, we’ll contact you by Friday the 5th of June. All contributors are paid and will receive a contributor copy. Articles will be due by the 15th of August.
